BMW G Series Key vs F Series Smart Key

What’s the difference between BMW G series key and F series key? Can we use F series key for G series?

Here is the clue.

BMW G Series Key vs F Series Smart Key

Design:

  • F Series Keys: These keys, used in BMW models from roughly 2008–2017 (e.g., F10 5 Series, F30 3 Series), have a more traditional, bulkier design. They typically feature a plastic housing and a physical blade for emergency access. The design is functional but less sleek compared to newer models.
  • G Series Keys: Introduced with BMW’s newer models (e.g., G20 3 Series, G30 5 Series, starting around 2017), G Series keys are sleeker, more modern, and often have a premium feel. Some feature a slimmer profile, metal accents, or even touchscreen displays (e.g., BMW Display Key). They may also include a rechargeable battery via USB or induction.

Technology and Features:

  • F Series Keys: Operate with older security systems like CAS (Car Access System) or early FEM/BDC (Front Electronic Module/Body Domain Controller). They support basic functions like locking/unlocking, trunk release, and Comfort Access (proximity-based unlocking/starting). Frequencies are typically 315 MHz (North America), 433 MHz (Europe/Asia), or 868 MHz.
  • G Series Keys: Use advanced FEM/BDC systems or newer BDC2 modules, with enhanced encryption for security. They support additional features like remote start, remote parking, or vehicle status display (on Display Keys). Some G Series keys use Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology for BMW Digital Key compatibility, allowing smartphones to act as keys.

Security Systems:

  • F Series Keys: Tied to CAS or early FEM/BDC systems, which are less encrypted than newer systems. Programming often requires dealer intervention or specialized locksmith tools.
  • G Series Keys: Linked to highly encrypted FEM/BDC or BDC2 systems, making DIY programming more challenging. They require advanced tools (e.g., Autel IM608, ABRITES, Xhorse, APPRO2, CGDI A2, Yanhua ACDP) or dealer activation for pairing.

Frequency and Internal Components:

Both key types use specific radio frequencies (315 MHz, 433 MHz, or 868 MHz), but G Series keys may incorporate newer chipsets (new NXP chip) for improved security and functionality. The internal boards, such as PCF7945 for some F Series keys, differ from those in G Series keys, which are designed for newer vehicle architectures.
